Business Card/Poster Process Pt. 1

I'm gonna post a blog here that originally appeared on my Myspace page last summer. I think artists who pretend to have secrets, can't and don't talk about their work are fucking lame. Sorry, there's no magic monkey painting pictures for people. Most artists hide behind a veil of mystery because of insecurity and whatever else. Like there's not enough bullshit out there in the (art)world. If that works for them...cool. But that's not how I roll. Just because someone knows a technique doesn't mean they can do what you do. The recipe for Maroger's medium isn't going to make an artist paint like Titian. Everyone is an artist these days and because of this web thing, people are stealing each other's stuff like crazy, aping styles, etc. My artist friends complain about this quite often and yes, it sucks. My take on it is that a person can't be or think like another person because of one's life experience, etc. It's about ideas and having a voice, first. Execution, second. In order for work to not be some superficial, stylistic jerk-off, it must have a voice. I too like stuff that looks cool, but I also like stuff that has a voice, soul, or the undefineable thing that leaves an impression. Sorry, that turned into a bit of a rant.

It's been a good two years since I've had proper business cards and done a promo poster so rather than recycle an old design, I've decided to do something new. I'll document the process from the the artwork creation, through the printing.

January Art Prints

I spent January doing the two cards as seen in my last two posts and printing 3 designs that I wasn't able to squeeze into my 2007 schedule. It was a busy month.

An art print inspired by signs along Massachusetts highways, my need to take things apart and reconstruct 'em, looking at everyday images differently, etc...

The return of my Universal Bunny Symbols. Official title: "Stop Breeding"...
A design from a few years back that I decided to print larger and more detailed. It's titled "Love"...
All prints are limited to 50 and currently for sale and in the Gallery.

Rat Love Card Set - Now Available

This 6.25" x 4.5" silk screened note card is designed and printed by me. I was thinking "city" when coming up with this idea. Hence, the brick red paper and asphalt colored envelope. The card is blank on the inside so you can use it for Valentine's Day or whenever you please. It's signed on the back in pencil by yours truly. Sets are available in my Etsy Shop and in the Gallery.

Valentine's Day Card Now on Sale

Love hurts, love stings, love bleeds, love sings. For those who aren't fans of cliche, sappy Valentine's Day cards and would rather have something edgy (no pun intended). Hey, a sense of humor is a very sexy asset. Anyway, I just finished printing and putting these 6.25" x 4.5" sets together....

The art is intentionally distressed for textural purposes. The paper used is archival, off-white/cream and features a two color print on the front and two colors on the inside. The card set comes with matching envelopes, a custom box. The cards are signed on the back in pencil by me. You can purchase them here...Etsy or on my web site.
